Review of detection, assessment and mitigation of security risk in smart grid

2017

The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into the existing power grid has created new problems to the grid. The grid network has become more vulnerable to security threats and risk which is a corollary to the modern data network. Smart Grid has strict latency requirement for data communication and the violation of this latency is very costly. This paper assesses the threats and vulnerabilities associated with the Smart Grid network and reviews the methods to mitigate these security risks.

Clinical utility of novel biomarkers for cardiovascular disease risk stratification

2012

Over the past few decades, a number of coronary artery disease (CAD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors have been identified. The predictive power of "conventional" risk factors have been validated by observational, prospective and intervention studies. Nevertheless, all attempts to exactly predict the individual risk for CAD have failed, biased by a large number of incorrectly risk-classified subjects. To improve cardiovascular (CV) risk prediction, a large number of genetic and/or non-genetic biomarkers have been discovered and tested against the "classical" risk factors for their power to predict CV risk. Only few of them had a significant improvement over the predictive model…

Indoor air pesticide in dwellings of breastfeeding mothers of the Valencian Region (Spain): Levels, exposure and risk assessment

2021

This study assessed the inhalation risk associated with indoor pesticide concentrations in the dwellings of 41 lactating mothers living in the Valencian Region, Spain, who were participants in the BETTERMILK project. Twenty-eight substances were investigated, including pyrethroid (PYRs), organophosphate (OPPs), and organochlorine (OCPs) pesticides. Bifenthrin, cypermethrin, lambda-cyhalothrin, malathion, permethrin and pyrimethanil were detected with frequencies ranging from 2% (malathion) to 80% (cypermethrin), and with an arithmetic mean concentration ranging from 4.1 ng m(-3) (bifenthrin) to 12.1 ng m-(3) (cypermethrin). The indoor air analysis was combined with several surveys to assess…

Dietary exposure in utero and during lactation to a mixture of genistein and an anti-androgen fungicide in a rat mammary carcinogenesis model

2015

Endocrine disruptors may play substantial roles in the high incidence of breast cancer. We previously described how early exposure to the mixture of phytoestrogen genistein (G) and the anti-androgen vinclozolin (V) affects peripubertal mammary development. This study evaluates the carcinogenic potential of exposure to V alone or associated with G from conception until weaning in Wistar rats. Dams were exposed to V, G or GV during pregnancy/lactation. At PND50 offspring were treated with DMBA[7,12-dimethylbenz(a)anthracene]. V or GV maternal exposure decreased number of DMBA-induced mammary tumors in the offspring, without significant modifications in tumor incidence, multiplicity and latenc…

Risk Assessment of "Other Substances" – L-Histidine

2020

The Norwegian Scientific Committee for Food Safety (Vitenskapskomiteen for mattrygghet, VKM) has, at the request of the Norwegian Food Safety Authority (Mattilsynet; NFSA), assessed the risk of "other substances" in food supplements and energy drinks sold in Norway. VKM has assessed the risk of doses given by NFSA. These risk assessments will provide NFSA with the scientific basis for regulating "other substances" in food supplements.
"Other substances" are described in the food supplement directive 2002/46/EC as substances other than vitamins or minerals that have a nutritional and / or physiological effect. It is added mainly to food supplements, but also to energy drinks and other …

Effect of aneurysm on the mechanical dissection properties of the human ascending thoracic aorta

2012

Objectives: The acute dissection of an ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA) represents a devastating separation of elastic layers occurring when the hemodynamic loads on the diseased wall exceed the adhesive strength between layers. At present, the mechanics underlying aortic dissection are largely unclear, and the biomechanical delamination properties of the aneurysmal aorta are not defined. Individuals with bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) are particularly predisposed to ascending aortic aneurysm formation, with a marked risk of aortic dissection. The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the dissection properties of nonaneurysmal and aneurysmal human ascending thoracic aorta …

Metformin and contrast-induced acte kidney injury in diabetic patients treated with primary percutaneous coronary intervention for ST segment elevati…

2016

IF 4.638; International audience; AIM : To analyze the association between chronic metformin treatment and the development of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) for ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).METHODS: Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) treated with PCI 27μmol/l (0.3mg/dl) or >50% over baseline after PCI. Since PCI was urgent, metformin could not be withheld prior to PCI but was usually stopped after PCI.RESULTS:Among the 372 patients included, 147 (40%) were using metformin, which had older diabetes, but had risk factors similar to patients without metformin. Baseline eGFR was better in pati…

Exploration into Uric and Cardiovascular Disease: Uric Acid Right for heArt Health (URRAH) Project, A Study Protocol for a Retrospective Observationa…

2018

The relevance of cardiovascular role played by levels of serum uric acid is dramatically growing, especially as cardiovascular risk factor potentially able to exert either a direct deleterious impact or a synergic effect with other cardiovascular risk factors. At the present time, it still remains undefined the threshold level of serum uric acid able to contribute to the cardiovascular risk. Indeed, the available epidemiological case studies are not homogeneous, and some preliminary data suggest that the so-called "cardiovascular threshold limit" may substantially differ from that identified as a cut-off able to trigger the acute gout attack. In such scenario, there is the necessity to clar…

Domains of Physical Activity in Relation to Stiffness Index in the General Population.

2021

Background Regular exercise training represents an important modifier of arterial stiffness (AS). Therefore, sex‐specific relations between domains of physical activity (PA; commuting, domestic, and leisure‐time PA, including active sport and occupational PA) with AS were investigated. Methods and Results Stiffness index by digital photoplethysmography was investigated in 12 650 subjects from the GHS (Gutenberg Health Study). Self‐reported PA was evaluated by the “Short Questionnaire to Assess Health‐Enhancing Physical Activity” and reported as activity score peer week, being a combined measure of duration, frequency, and intensity of PA. Multivariable linear regression analysis demonstrat…
